The situation which impacts Qantas in a catastrophic and disastrous manner was the collapse of Allco in the year 2008 because of the global financial and economic crisis (Mules, 2013). As a result of these crisis there took place several management changes in the airlines which have given rise to enormous management and labor issues. Qantas invested in an Asian-based airline which had shaken the two major unions i.e. the Australian and International Pilots Association and Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association. It was stated by the airlines that these two associations are developing barricades in the path of growth and innovation as they are continuing with the old practices and demands much higher perks and pays for those services. There were various industrial actions which took against Qantas in order to protect the rights of the pilots. The situation took a deteriorate condition when in reaction to the industrial action the airline has keep on halt of all the international and the domestic flight for two days which was a decision of the CEO of the airlines Alan Joyce. And this was an underwhelming decision which was opposed by the workers, employees and even by the passengers. The one more issue was the job cut offs as the airlines declared that it will cut off 500 jobs for reducing the cots but when the actual decision took place the results were that 2800 jobs were cut off which was approximately ten percent of the overall population (Taylor, 2016). And this creates extreme managerial issues in the airlines. There were increased ethical, managerial, decision making issues which were rising rapidly and thus the airline was suffering from losses and other conflicts for continuous years (ABC, 2011). It was analyzed that there were various other airlines except Qantas who were major players in the airways industry but they were not such extreme industrial conflicts which took place at those airlines in comparison with Qantas and this was majorly because of the ineffective ways of resolving the conflicts as well as the authoritarian rule which governs the airlines. In the year 2011 when there were grounding of the operations of the flights for two days and this decision was the aftermath effect of the industrial actions taken against the airlines by thE union association. It was found that this decision was an unethical decision by the airlines as without any prior information the airline halt its operation because of which thousands of its passengers had to suffer a lot and this action was regarded as an escalation in the commitment made by the airlines to provide peaceful and delighted services to the customers. It was also analyzed that Alan Joyce was found to be an individual decision maker who does not concern with the management authorities for any change and individual took major decisions such as grounding of the airlines. This was a major management issue prevailing in the airlines (Daily mail, 2014). From the case there were reflections of the SWOT analysis of the airlines as its innovativeness, wages to the staff, improved customer services were the biggest strengths of the airlines whereas the management issues, industrial conflicts, authoritarian rules, sudden decision making were the weaknesses which had made the airline suffer a lot. The airlines must firstly have an integrated approach in the decision making. The integrated approach means when there are taken opinions and viewpoints of all the respective authorities and associated members which might get impacted with that decision such as there must be involvement of the workers, management authorities whenever any sort of decision has to be taken in the company (Sangkuhl and Elfriede, 2016). The next recommendation is to have greater employee engagement, which emphasizes on having better plans and programs which can increase the engagement and involvement of the employees so that the needs and requirements of the workers can also be accomplished while achieving the organizational goals. Thirdly instead of the negative responses over the vario us opposition from third parties the airline must have an optimistic approach in dealing with the situation such as have corporate conferences to have a settlement rather than harsh and unethical decisions like grounding of the flights. There is also a need that the operations undertaken must be in compliance with the various laws and regulations such as labor laws, international business rules etc (Ashurst Australia, 2012). The airlines must have a strategy of correct regulation balance which focuses upon have adequate changes in the functioning, operations and management as there must be relevance with previous set standards and policies so that the new regulation dos not hamper the working in a negative manner so the correct regulation balance is required to maintain within the airlines. Another proposed strategy is the airlines must have a balanced approach to conflicts which emphasize on resolving the workplace conflicts in the most possible constructive manner. As when the conflicts are resolved with a negative an d an un-balanced approach there are chances that negative outcomes will arise and the conflict will also not get resolved whereas with a balanced approach there are significant chances that people will get influenced and support the decision and the conflict will be resolved with no other subsequent issues (Forsyth, n.d.). Insider The Insider A dramatization of 1995 events in which the tobacco industry allegedly covered up proof that nicotine is addictive and harmful. When Brown and Williamson executive Jeffrey Wigand (Crowe) tries to expose the industry's cover-up, he is threatened into silence. He eventually gets his story to 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman (AL Pacino), but CBS decides against airing it due to political and economic pressures, and the threat of lawsuit from Brown and Williamson. Before we start, I think it's important that you know a little thing about me, and where I'm coming from. I do smoke. But I believe that most of the lawsuits filed against the tobacco industry are unfounded, desperate attempts for people to put the blame on anyone but themselves. I think social security is a safety net for the financially irresponsible. I thought The Insider was a great movie from a strictly entertainment perspective (don't get ahead of me on this one!), and I enjoyed it very much. Russell Crowe is Jeffrey Wigand, a Brown and Williamson VP of Research and Development whose conscience compels him to blow the whistle on the industry. He claims that Big Tobacco has been covering up scientific research that proves nicotine is addictive and harmful. The writing puts a lot of energy into making sure that Wigand is a sufficiently complicated character, and one that we sympathize with. To be sure, he's not entirely one-dimensional. Initially, he does what most of us would do in his position: he takes the money and benefits that the company offers him in return for silence. After all, the guy has a family to look out for. But then Wigand is tortured over his passiveness, wondering if he should take a more aggressive stance with his potentially damaging knowledge. 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman, sensing a big story in the works, tries to coax Wigand into talking. An energetic Al Pacino, who fights to get the story on the air, only to have it snuffed by CBS, plays Bergman here. Allegedly, the television network was possibly up for sale around the time of this story, and airing it might have damaged their image with controversy, making it less appealing to potential suitors. This, coupled with the threat of lawsuit from Brown and Williamson, made CBS refuse to air the story. The Insider portrays these events as a crusade on the part of Bergman and Wigand to get the truth out there, against the will of Big Business and Bigger Tobacco. And while Bergman is never portrayed as much more than a journalist with an uncharacteristic amount of integrity, Wigand is a great character to follow as he tries to balance out everything around him. Tortured and sleepless, his reactions are what you would expect from someone forced to choose between the safety of his family with the gravity of what he knows. Most of it makes for edge of your suit viewing. Suspense abounds, and AL Pacino's confrontations with the evil corporate executives, censors, and whatnot are the centerpiece of the movie. He gets to climb up on the soapbox and belt out a few speeches about truth and justice and freedom and right and wrong and all that other fun stuff. It's tense, and it's really quite fascinating, actually. From a dramatic standpoint, this movie couldn't have asked for better performances. Gina Gershon makes an appearance in the movie as a tough, icy corporate attorney for CBS. As a standard caricature of faceless law more interested in money than people, she's fabulous. The Insider runs at over two and half hours, but always remains interesting and never drags. The biggest issue I have with this movie is how it so comfortably passes itself off as an unbiased, historical representation of what happened between real life executive Jeffrey Wigand, real life producer Lowell Bergman, and real life corporation Brown and Williamson. The problem is that the movie is so well crafted and so interesting that it's very easy to accept it as 100% Grade A Truth. However, this is clearly Wigand's story, and closer inspection would reveal that the main characters here are just a little too perfect to be real. It must h ave taken some masterful skill to form the rubber just the way he wanted it, because the rubber numbers on the calendar look like dough. The advantages of working with acrylic gesso would be that the first coat would dry easily. The limitations of working with enamel include the fact that enamel takes a longer time to dry. III. Style Elements of the composition work to constitute the artist’s style, much in the way that putting a bunch of puzzle pieces together creates a whole picture. As for what movement within which Oldenburg was working, he was clearly in the realm of various possible categorizations: Modernist, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art. It’s possible it might have even been more than one style blended together. At any rate, â€Å"Claes Oldenburg's highly individual figurations make him one of the leading protagonists of Pop Art† (Osterwold 193). Pop art, short for popular art, was at its heyday in the ‘60s, along with the likes of Roy Licht enstein and others. Unmistakably, as one can see below, the calendar for the month of August of 1962 starts with the number â€Å"29,† as that was the day of the week from the previous month of July in that particular year. One also may note that the August calendar of 1962 ends with the number â€Å"1,† because the last day in the calendar was September 1st of 1962—according to the painting. The numbers and letters almost look like baked bread dough rising. More is forthcoming about why this painting looks like it does, in the next section regarding the context of the painting. IV. Context One should examine also, the context of the work. This was painted in the 60s by Claes Oldenburg. He was born in Sweden in 1929, but is an American citizen. It’s uncertain exactly where he painted it, nor with what other works it would be in conversation with unless one talks about this painting being a type of conversation piece in the context of Pop Art. All of the f irst days of the week on the calendar are painted red, while the other days are white. One is unsure whether the colors or this particular month held any kind of cultural or historical events or issues which the piece is addressing. Assuming the reader of this essay agrees with the above definition, I will explore the following thesis, and support my answer with appropriate, adequate documentation, from "Conversations": "Should abortion be legal? At what point in time, and under what criteria should it be restricted?" Let me begin with a rather neutral source. Sallie Tisdale, a registered nurse and writer (Tisdale, 737) in her essay, 'We Do Abortions Here', states: "Like many women my age, I took the pill as soon as I was sexually active. To risk pregnancy when it was so easy to avoid seemed stupid, and my contraceptive success, as it were, was part of the promise of social enlightenment. But birth control fails, far more frequently than laboratory trials predict" (Tisdale, 738) According to the 'left', abortion shouldn't be legal for anyone, regardless of the circumstances. Women Have the Right to Abortion Essay -- Argumentative Persuasive Arg Women Have the Right to Abortion Webster's New World Dictionary defines the word abortion as, "any spontaneous expulsion of an embryo or a fetus before it is sufficiently developed to survive" (Webster's 1988; Pps. 3- 4). Assuming the reader of this essay agrees with the above definition, I will explore the following thesis, and support my answer with appropriate, adequate documentation, from "Conversations": "Should abortion be legal? At what point in time, and under what criteria should it be restricted?" Let me begin with a rather neutral source. Sallie Tisdale, a registered nurse and writer (Tisdale, 737) in her essay, 'We Do Abortions Here', states: "Like many women my age, I took the pill as soon as I was sexually active. To risk pregnancy when it was so easy to avoid seemed stupid, and my contraceptive success, as it were, was part of the promise of social enlightenment. But birth control fails, far more frequently than laboratory trials predict" (Tisdale, 738) According to the 'left', abortion shouldn't be legal for anyone, regardless of the circumstances. What about this first example? Do those with this philosophy imply that women just shouldn't have sex, plain and simple, until they're ready to handle caring for a child? How does this conflict with the reality in our society that young men and women are having sex at an earlier age, then in previous generations? Is it possible that although this idea is well-intentioned, it may not take into account a person's need to be sexual, which is just part of the human condition? What's a woman to do, if she's taken the necessary precautions, including one of several choices, including condoms (both for men and women), or the pill, and either method fails... ...ld have the option to terminate the pregnancy immediately, as such conditions arise, regardless of the developmental stage of the unborn fetus.
